The Sultan's Palace....

Tangier Kasbah, Morocco...

sunny 30 °C

Tangier Kasbah and the Sultan's palace are two of the highlights of any Tangier visit, both were in existence in Roman eras to repel attack by passing pirates intent on a spot of plundering, the fortifications appear to have done this quite effectively, with massive thick walls and a substantial cannonade.

Nowadays, they are both major tourist attractions, the Kasbah is free to explore and can be accessed by any of three Babs ( gates) Bab Haha, Bab Assa and the main vehicular entrance at Place du Tabor. The Palace is now a museum and the entrance ticket costs 20 dirhams. There is a small cinema showing projector slides of the many artifacts and ancient maps of the surrounding terrain, discovered on the plateau of Hafa over two millennia Tangier Kasbah the former Sultan's palace...

Inside the palace there is access to the Sultan's garden which comprises of fruit trees, a small cannon, mosque and a curious old bore well intended to supply the palace occupants with drinking water in the event of siege by barbarians.......Tangier Kasbah a bore well in the Sultan's garden...

An interesting day's exploration, to reach the Kasbah and Palace it's a steep climb all uphill but well worth the effort, and the descent through the Medina is much easier.
